Meditation Classes
“Yogà ve Jàyati bhùri”
“From meditation does wisdom spring”
The type of meditation taught at the Dharmashoka Buddhist Vihara belong to the Theravada tradition of Buddhism. This is the type of Buddhism found predominantly in Sri Lanka and other south Asian countries.
Meditation (Bhavana) means ‘cultivation’ of wholesome mental states. These states are then used along with various other methods of practice to bring about total peace to the mind. This peace is beyond race, colour or creed.
In terms of the meditations practiced, Samatha and Vipassana are the two main types of meditation taught. One gives rise to tranquillity and stability of mind, while the other gives rise to deep insight into the nature of phenomena. This in turn gives rise to letting go of all phenomena that arises in the mind. Buddhists practice not only meditation, but the entirety of what is known as the Noble Eightfold Path, which includes developing view, attitudes and personal traits conducive to a peaceful existence.
